Waltz

Walt is a sweeping, gliding dance which twists and turns as it moves counterclockwise around the dance floor. The broad sliding steps and gentle sway give it a fluid rise and fall motion.

Social

Generally, the waltz is used at formal affairs like weddings, or black tie events. In the course of an evening, you may hear 3 or 4 waltzes played. Waltz can also be found in country western dance with a few styling changes.

Music

Waltz is ¾ time. Approx 34 bars per minute

Waltz songs

Come Away with Me - Norah Jones

Take it to the limit – Eagles

Open Arms - Journey

Foolish - Johnny Matthis

Moon River - Henry Mancini

Could I Have This Dance – Anne Murray

When Winter Comes – Chris de Burgh

Health

Waltz has a rise and fall action which utilizes the strength and flexibility of the ankle joint. It helps the body learn and maintain a better sense of balance and smooth transitions in coordinated movement.

History

With roots back in the 1600’s it became popular in the late 1700’s to early 1800’s. It was considered a scandalous dance at the time because the partners faced each other and danced close together. With it’s traditional box step, and being the first dance in closed hold, it is often considered the “mother” of social dance.
